Cup marks

FinntorpFossumThe cup mark is the most common and most simple symbol. We find it in all cultures on all continents. The interpretations are many, but we can at very least assume that the symbol has a complex symbolic value.

Based on its position between the legs of a woman, a general interpretation is that of a female fertility symbol. But it is also placed in combination with, for example, animals and ploughing scenes and is therefore also called “the feminine fertility symbol”.

Other interpretations are, among others: offer dishes, elf mills (älvkvarn) and butter stones, but these interpretations date from later popular beliefs.
