The re-documentation of the rock carvings in Tanum was started in 1989 by Tanums Hällristningsmuseum Underslös and its supporting association, the Scandinavian Society for Prehistoric Art.

It is carried out at the international working seminars arranged by the museum every summer, where a group consisting of somewhere between 25 and 30 volunteers from eight or ten different countries work for a week on the project of documenting the rock art of Tanum / UNESCO World Heritage Area.

Tanums Hällristningsmuseum Underslös, Sweden, (Museum and Rock Art Research Centre of Tanum) has over 40 years of experience with documentation of rock art, and the museum is all the time developing new methods for the various phases of the documentation and also continually assessing the suitability of the methods for different degrees of weathering.
